My Heart in Kenya is a touching one-hour documentary about an emotional reunion years in the making. Local film maker Hunter Wood heard the story of this mother who is separated from her infant at birth while resettling in Surrey, BC. Zeynab had to make an impossible choice. While fleeing with her children to Canada from a Kenyan refugee camp, she was forced to leave the youngest, baby Nasteha, behind. Ruth Beardsley heard this harrowing story while working with Zeynab in a Surrey United Way-supported First Steps: Early Years Refugee Program. Ruth decided to do something incredible: Travel to Nairobi and return Nasteha to her mother in Canada. My Heart in Kenya follows Ruth’s journey to Kenya as she navigates the seemingly insurmountable barriers that split Zeynab’s family apart.
