GAR Report: Oct – Dec 2023 & 2023 Year in Review

Read the latest Government-Assisted Refugee (GAR) Bulletin that explores the demographics of the Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) that arrived in British Columbia in 2023.

Highlights from the report include:

  • Over 2,700 GARs arrived in BC during 2023, including those that moved from other provinces. This number was made up of 1,213 family units
  • The top 5 source countries for GARs in 2023 were Afghanistan (54%), Syria (18%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (8%), Sudan (3%), and Somalia (4%).
  • Surrey remained the most common municipality to host GAR arrivals in 2023, welcoming 82% of the GARs. GARs settled in much smaller numbers in other muncipalities including: Delta (5%), Burnaby (5%), Langley (4%) and Richmond (4%).
