BC Refugee Hub Training Webinar: Skilled Immigration as a Solution for Refugees

Join speakers Sandra Elgersma (UNHCR Canada) and Dana Wagner (TalentLift) to learn more about Canada’s Economic Mobility Pathways Project (EMPP) .

In June, Minister Mendicino announced the expansion of Canada’s Economic Mobility Pathways Project (EMPP) to welcome 500 refugee principal applicants and their families on economic pathways over the next two years. This webinar will explore this innovative project, which reflects the approach to solutions set out in the Global Compact for Refugees.

This webinar is hosted by Bahar Taheri from the BC Refugee Hub (a program of ISSofBC) and generously funded by the Province of British Columbia.

SPEAKERS:

Sandra Elgersma

Sandra Elgersma works for the UNHCR in Canada as Assistant Resettlement and Complementary Pathways Officer. In this role, she is the focal point for complementary pathways, labour mobility in particular. Prior to joining the UNHCR, Ms. Elgersma was an Analyst and Chief at the Library of Parliament, where for many years she was assigned to support the House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.

Dana Wagner

Dana Wagner is Co-Founder and Managing Director of TalentLift, a non-profit dedicated to opening skilled migration pathways to refugees as a new solution to displacement. Previously, she was Canada Director with Talent Beyond Boundaries, the first organization worldwide dedicated to displaced talent mobility and an implementing partner of Canada’s pioneering Economic Mobility Pathways Project (EMPP). She previously worked with Independent Senator Ratna Omidvar, the Global Diversity Exchange at Ryerson University, Maytree, and the IOM Vietnam. She was Co-Founder of Canadian political fact checker FactsCan, a founding Board Member of the Refugee Career Jumpstart Project (Jumpstart), and co-author of Flight and Freedom: Stories of Escape to Canada. She has a Master’s of Global Affairs and Bachelor of Journalism and Political Science. Dana has worked in Toronto, Ottawa, Hanoi, and Nairobi.
